Don’t have a table runner? No problem. A length of festive fabric from a craft store, or even a decorative scarf, works perfectly. The key is creating contrast. If your tablecloth is smooth, choose something with texture for your runner.
Napkins offer another layering opportunity. “Fold cloth napkins and place them on top of your plates, or tuck them into wine glasses,” suggests King. “Even paper napkins can look sophisticated if you choose quality ones in complementary colors.”

“The secret is to keep your centerpiece low enough that guests can see each other across the table,” notes King. “Nothing kills conversation like having to peer around a massive arrangement.”
